Bridgewater Town Council could soon look at banning dogs in cemeteries.
At their last meeting, council addressed concerns around pets defecating on gravestones.
Mayor David Mitchell says dogs are required to be on a leash in the town, while failure to pick up after your pet will lead to a $250 fine.
He says the first step will be increased enforcement of those rules.
“We’d like to not go down the road of having to ban all dogs from Brookside Cemetery. We don’t want one or two people to ruin that for everybody. So we’re going to increase enforcement.”
But if that doesn’t solve the problem, council could take further action.
“It might be as drastic as saying there can’t be dogs in the cemetery. We can not have dogs using people’s gravestones as their toilets. It’s wrong on so many levels and I think the community would agree.”
Council will revisit the issue in September once staff prepares a report on the effectiveness of increased enforcement.
