Yarmouth RCMP has found human remains after a fire that occurred overnight on a remote island near Little River Harbour.
Police responded to the call near 2:00 a.m. on September 3 and learned that two men had gone to a camp overnight and that the camp had caught fire.
One man managed to escape but the second man was missing. While police were on their way to the island, the fire had burned itself out.
The first man was rescued and a search for the second man was launched. His remains were found soon after in the rubble of the fire.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and is being supported by RCMP Forensic Identification Services.
The name of the island was initially reported as “Broomstick Island” by the RCMP. The island is actually named “Upper Calf Island”.
