The RCMP are investigating an incident where First Nation boats were cut from their moorings at a wharf in Weymouth.
Yesterday at 7:57 a.m., Digby RCMP received a complaint that eight boats were cut from their moorings at the wharf sometime overnight. They say when they arrived, they learned 10 boats had been cut. All of the boats were retrieved by their owners.
There was no damage to the boats, however, a crate of lobster worth approximately $800 was stolen from one of the vessels.
The RCMP say the investigation is ongoing, with support from RCMP Special Tactical Operations and Street Crime Enforcement investigators.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Digby RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
The statement from police went on to say that RCMP in Nova Scotia have and will continue taking steps to ensure that those who unlawfully interfere with or threaten the safety of any person or property are held accountable in accordance with Canada’s laws.
Sipekne’katik Chief Mike Sack said in a statement that cutting the boats loose was intended to intimidate the community.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has stated that they strongly condemn the acts of vandalism.
