The Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance are seeking intervener status in Indigenous court challenges against the province and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
In a release today, the alliance says they’re looking at Supreme Court challenges from Sipekne’katik and Potlotek First Nations on DFO regulation and enforcement of Indigenous fishing activities, and the province governing the sale of fish and fish products.
President Colin Sproul says it’s important that the perspective of those who work within the multi-species fisheries every day is heard and considered.
He says UFCA members will be directly affected if the court challenges are successful.
Sproul says the alliance supports Indigenous rights to fish for food, social and ceremonial purposes, and hopes all fishers can work together in the commercial fishery.
The alliance represents commercial fishing associations throughout the province.
