Fundraising for a new van for Veterans Place in Yarmouth has surpassed half of what is needed.
The current van at Veterans Place, a long-term care facility at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, is 17 years old.
Due to its age and the cost of maintenance, a fundraising effort was launched to purchase a new vehicle.
Don McCumber, the campaign’s chairman and Royal Canadian legion district commander, gave CJLS News the latest numbers this morning.
“We’ve hit the $60,000 which i think is really good. We’re aiming for $104,000. On the weekend Branch 61 in Yarmouth held a biker scavenger hunt and they raised $3,000. About 60 people took part.”
In February, 95-year-old veteran and Veterans Place resident Henry ‘Miff’ O’Connell donated $1000.
McCumber is very thankful for the support so far from legion branches, local businesses, municipal governments and individuals.
He’s hopeful donations keep coming in.
“It allows them to get out. They go to local social events, they go to Ellenwood Park and of course it takes them to Remembrance Day events.”
