Firefighters in Barrington Passage worked to put out a fire at the home of one of their own on Saturday.
Around 5 p.m. the Island and Barrington Passage Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire, in Doctors Cove.
Chief Walter Scott says they arrived at the story and a half tall house to find heavy fire and smoke at the back.
“We put an inch and three quarter line in through the back door, they did a fire fight all the way to the second floor,” says Scott. “Once we got to the second floor, fire conditions changed quickly on the first floor and I had two firefighters that had to bail out a second story window.”
One of the firefighters who bailed out received burns to his left hand.
The Island and Barrington Passage Volunteer Fire Department were assisted by the Woods Harbour – Shag Harbour, Barrington/Port La Tour and Shelburne fire departments.
Scott says the department will do what they can to help the homeowner and fellow member of the department, Dave Andrews.
“Our fire department is in the process of seeing what they need and planning on doing what we can do to support them,” says Scott. “It kind of affected the whole department. We hate going to a fire at somebody’s house, especially if its a member of your department.”
Scott says the fire gutted the home and a Go Fund Me Page has been created to support Andrews.
