Two local beaches are currently closed to swimming due to bacteria in the water.
Mavillette and Port Maitland beaches will remain closed until water sample tests come back later this week.
The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service says they will re-open the waters only if the tests come back clear.
Julian Zou, assistant director of technical operations says this bacteria normally comes from animal feces.
He tells Acadia News, if you’ve been swimming there recently, you should be fine as long as you didn’t ingest the water.
“If they did ingest it, we ask them to look out for symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, and if they have those to go to their doctor. If there was no chance of ingestion, they shouldn’t be too worried.”
Lifeguards on site from 10am-6pm each day will advise people not to swim, however the beach will not officially be supervised.
Zou says there are many factors that could have led to the bacteria showing up in the water, including the very humid weather.
Water test results are expected by the end of the week.
