A business in Yarmouth has been fined for violating the province’s Health Protection Act.
Yarmouth Municipal RCMP say they received a complaint yesterday afternoon of food truck employees not wearing masks.
Police arrived and confirmed that none of the employees were wearing masks, with the owner advising that they refused to wear them because the public health restrictions are not ‘law.’
The business was then charged for operating in contravention of masking requirements, and fined nearly $12,000.
The owner of the business, Mitchell Muise reached out to Acadia Broadcasting and believes the fine is unjust.
“It’s definitely unjust. You could do a lot worse things and get a lot less of a fine,” said Muise. “I know I’m probably the example to be made of.”
Muise says that anxiety and claustrophobia prevents him from wearing a mask. He says that he does wear one around customers.
Muise plans to fight the charge in court.
RCMP are reminding citizens to follow public health orders and municipal bylaws.
