The province has invested $120,000 for the Tri-counties to streamline their planning for land use.
The Tri-County Planning Initiative will work to establish one set of rules for planning in the area.
This according to Argyle Municipality CAO Alain Muise, who discussed how the initiative was started.
“It started as a meeting amongst administrators across Shelburne, Digby and Yarmouth county,” said Muise. “The province had set aside some minimum planning standards for us to have to comply to and we thought rather than have eight or nine different planners with eight or nine different decisions, why don’t we look at the situation together.”
He also discussed why the initiative is important.
“We gain quite a bit of alignment by doing this,” says Muise. “We all have separate plans that tell us what zones and land use can be in our communities but because we don’t work together on that, we don’t necessarily have the same planners looking at plans and saying ‘Why don’t we look at the strength of the three counties and apply planning based on their strengths.'”
The investment was made after the initiative was pitched to the province. Muise says the funding spans two years of work on the initiative, covering 75% of the costs.
