Today is Earth Day, a day to recognize the need to protect and preserve the environment.
Here in Nova Scotia, the Adopt-A-Highway Program Association are giving people the tools they need to collect garbage in their area through the Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up program.
Those who register a cleanup will be given bags, gloves, vests and flagging tape. After the trash is collected, Adopt-A-Highway will also help dispose of it.
Program Coordinator Meaghan Mason discussed why its important to do cleanups at this time of year.
“I feel like its so prominent because the snow has been melting and all the litter that’s been collecting over the last couple months, we can all see it now. It just makes it that much more prominent,” said Mason. “You can’t look anywhere without seeing litter basically.”
Mason also shared a message for Earth Day.
“We just need lots of people doing small environmental changes in their daily life and that would really make a big difference,” said Mason. “You don’t have to go vegan or do a cleanup every single weekend. Just making small changes in your life really makes a big difference.”
