A Weymouth man has been arrested in the Halifax area for assaulting police officers as well as impaired driving offences.
A patrolling RCMP member was waived over by an employee of a business around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday to check on a vehicle parked nearby, due to suspicious activity.
The member approached the vehicle and the driver came out, reportedly showing signs of impairment. The driver attempted to punch the RCMP member while they tried to speak to him.
After being taken to the ground and handcuffed, the driver continued to assault the member by kicking him. Meanwhile, three other occupants of the vehicle fled the area, but were located a short time later and taken to a safe location.
The driver was taken to the Cole Harbour Detachment for breath samples. There, the driver assaulted two other officers by kicking and headbutting them. He also refused to provide breath samples.
On the way to booking, the driver continuously bashed his head on the safety shield, causing injury. EHS attended and he was taken to hospital.
The driver was identified as 25 year-old Colton Leigh Thibault from Weymouth. He was taken into custody and was scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court today.
The charges against Thibault include:
- Assaulting a Peace Officer x 3
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance
- Refuse or Fail to Provide Breath Sample
- Fail to Comply with Release Order x 4
- Fail to Comply with Recognizance x 3
The RCMP say that their investigation is ongoing.
