Yarmouth’s mayor says the town will continue testing well and surface water near Lake George.
It is the sight where tonnes of contaminated soil was dumped and spread in an effect to reclaim the land
with natural growth.
The town has always maintained it believed the material to be Class B compost. It was not. Plastics, sharps and other
undesirable material were mixed in with the soil.
Mayor Pam Mood says it was all cleaned up.
She was asked if policies need be put in place to prevent this type of thing from happening again.
“Going forward we’re certainly aware that a mistake was made, and it was a mistake. I’m not sure we can make a policy to cover mistakes.”
The town was ordered by the province’s environment department to remove the material to an approved facility.
It missed several deadlines.
She said the material was screened at the town’s compost facility and the soil will be sold or given away.
Mood says the town has done its part.
“I haven’t personally spoken to any of the residents but folks have told me that they have and they’re generally pleased.”
“We just needed to remove the material and that’s been done.’
