A program that helps kids with the basics of hockey will return this month.
The First Shift is for children aged 6-10 who have never played hockey.
It’s a partnership between the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association and the Yarmouth Junior A Mariners, along with Canadian Tire and Hockey Canada.
Local First Shift organizer Derek Amalfa says gear from Bauer is provided.
“It’s a six week program. It includes all the hockey equipment from skates to helmets, sticks, bags, socks, everything that a child would need to start their hockey journey.”
Amalfa says the first program last year saw many kids move on to minor hockey.
“We had 20 participants, and 16 or 17 of those children went on to become a part of Yarmouth Minor Hockey. It’s a really great credit to us, it shows that it works, and it eases children and families into the hockey world.”
The program begins October 11 with gear fitting, the first on-ice session is Monday, October 17.
