A number of phone scams asking for Social Insurance Numbers in Barrington has led to a warning from RCMP.
The scams involve someone calling from a specific federal agency saying that actions will be taken if you do not speak with a representative. When you’re connected to someone, they ask for your SIN. The callers say that there are issues with your SIN or that you’ll will be arrested if personal information is not given.
Police say the calls may come from 1-800 numbers, local numbers or the RCMP toll-free number. They’re advising anyone who receives a call asking for personal or financial information to request a name and a call-back number and to verify who’s making the request.
If you’re in the Barrington area and think you’ve been targeted by a scam, contact the RCMP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
