Opinions on their new Blue Economy Strategy are being sought by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
In December the federal government committed to growing the blue economy. The economic model concerns the use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while at the same time preserving the ecosystem of the oceans.
DFO Minister Bernadette Jordan talked about the potential of a Blue Economy.
“What the blue economy is meant to do is help us to develop the right policy, help us to make sure we’re making strategic investments in industry and our ocean space, to make sure we’re addressing concerns we’re hearing from people.” said Jordan.
Jordan says they are planning a number of roundtables with the groups involved. Individuals can download and send back an engagement kit on DFO’s Blue Economy webpage.
A survey will also be released in the coming days.
“This can’t be a from Ottawa top down approach to a strategy,” said Jordan. “This has to come from community organizations. It has to come from industry. It has to come from stakeholder groups. We want to make sure that we’re hearing from everyone, that we’re addressing the concerns we’re hearing.”
