Provincial NDP leader Gary Burrill made stops in the Tri-counties this week.
Burrill spoke with Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood, Chamber of Commerce Executive Rick Allwright and the council of the municipality of the district of Digby.
In an interview with Y95 news, Burrill noted that the conversations all came back to one key issue.
“About what it is that we in the province are needing now and what we’re going to be needing from our provincial government in this period of economic recovery from COVID-19.”
Burrill says that two of the most important elements for economic recovery are improving conditions in long term care homes, and supporting lower paid workers.
“People working for lower incomes and lower wages in our society and in our economy have got to have their economic situation addressed,” said Burrill. “I think that COVID-19 has placed that in front of us.”
Some of Burrill’s examples of helping lower paid workers includes instituting a $15 minimum wage, permanent rent control and looking at income assistance rates as they relate to the poverty line.
