A solid waste authority in Western Nova Scotia is still having to crack down on illegal dumping.
Wastecheck’s compliance inspector and by-law enforcement officer follow up on complaints and
try and catch those responsible.
General manager Gus Green says the public plays an important role.
“It’s really because of them reporting the issues to us when they see them that we’re able to address them. There’s a lot of public out there
and very few of our staff so we really rely on the public to get that information to us if they stumble upon an illegal dumpsite or if they
actually see the activity occurring.”
Green says he can’t understand why people do it.
“The vast majority of things that we find in illegal dumpsites are materials that people could put at the curbside for pickup for free to take to
one of the local facilities for free.”
Green says they deal with illegal dumping on a regular basis but not as often as in the past. .
He credits the public’s distaste for the activity and says they are reporting it more often.
Wastecheck represents municipal units in Region 7: municipalities of Argyle, Clare, Digby, Yarmouth along
with the towns of Digby and Yarmouth.
