Police are warning of an attempted scam related to a local missing persons case.
RCMP say that on Tuesday, a member of Zachary Lefave’s family was contacted via text message.
The Mounties say the message, written in somewhat dis-jointed English, stated that Lefave was still alive and would be released if the person sent $7,000 in gift cards.
If not, he would be killed.
The family contacted police immediately, who launched an investigation.
RCMP say they believe the fraudster got the phone number from social media.
No cash or cards were sent to the scammer.
Police say they’re still seeking any information on Lefave’s whereabouts.
He was last seen walking on Highway 334 in Plymouth shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day.
