The Municipality of the District of Argyle will be tackling speeding issues with the purchase of a new speed radar sign.
Councilors have fielded a number of concerns about speeding, particularly from concerned business owners on the Dennis Point Road in West Pubnico.
The initial request was for a crosswalk, which council forwarded to the Department of Transportation & Infrastructure Renewal (DOT).
The department’s recommended solution included amber hazard lights at a cost that was described as ‘horrendous’.
During their regular monthly meeting, council approved the purchase of the new speed radar sign.
Warden Danny Muise discussed why the council decided to get involved with the issue.
“It’s certainly something that I don’t feel its our responsibility to do that but we’re the ones getting the complaints,” said Muise. “I have contacted the RCMP on a couple of occasions. Then when I’ve spoken to the people afterwards and they’ve said that haven’t seen any changes at all with more RCMP presence.”
Councilor Kathy Bourque discussed what the next steps for the new sign should be.
“I think we should just purchase one as a pilot project to see how it works,” said Bourque. “Because then we can make a policy or if we’re going to need some in other areas. We have a large area to cover.”
Staff will now work on developing the policy including where the new speed radar sign will be placed.
