After delays caused by COVID-19, the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce is moving forward with the Medical Learning Housing Project, working with Coastal Financial Credit Union.
CEO of Coastal Financial Credit Union, Rick Doucette, says that they are community minded and wanted to get involved with the chamber’s Doctor Recruitment program.
After meeting with the Chamber of Commerce they learned what the biggest issue was.
“One of the biggest obstacles for recruiting doctors to the area was the lack of housing,” said Doucette. “We recognized that the importance of having a strong health care infrastructure in the development of a region was essential. Immediately our board wanted to be part of this in a very large way.”
Coastal Financial purchased the prospective property, which is located at 30 Vancouver Street. Doucette was the one who found the property for the project.
“It’s literally 2 or 3 houses away from the hospital. It’s a property that I see, coincidentally, on my way to work every morning,” said Doucette. “I was passing by this particular property and noticed that it was for sale.”
After scrapping plans to renovate the existing property, they’ve decided to construct a new 5 unit building in its place.
Certified Project Manager Lloyd MacDougall has been hired by Coastal Financial to oversee the project.
Demolition will start later this month. The building is expected to be ready for tenants in the fall.
