The Premier says delays to issuing an emergency alert during Wednesday’s manhunt lies with the RCMP.
Stephen McNeil made those comments at a post cabinet press conference Thursday afternoon.
McNeil said the Emergency Management Office would be negligent to issue an alert without direction from the agency in charge, in this case the RCMP.
“We’re not doing something through an EMO alert that actually hurts Nova Scotians, creates more of a problem, more of a panic. We need to make sure we have the facts, and the facts have to come from the agency of choice,” he said. “Because they tweeted something, does not, in any way, provide the appropriate communication level for the province to issue that.”
McNeil said it took EMO officials seven minutes, from when they received the request from the RCMP, to issue the emergency alert.
Also while speaking to reporters, McNeil added his voice to those decrying violence in the US capitol.
Protestors stormed the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. during the electoral college vote in an attempt to stop the confirmation of President-Elect Joe Biden.
Four people died.
McNeil said the world needs a democratic America which respects the rule of law.
He said he was shocked by the events.
“Like, I think, the entire country and globe were shocked by what took place at the Capitol yesterday, and quite frankly more shocked by the fact that it was incited by the president.”
Joe Biden was confirmed early Thursday morning.
