Minister Zach Churchill says the drought in the South Shore is new for the province and they’re learning as they go.
He says the province has helped by opening up provincial parks for showers and supplying bottled water and water tankers.
Churchill says no one knows how many people are on dug wells in the province.
“Obviously when there’s data that’s harder to come by that creates challenges in terms of response. But today, all reports indicate all those that require water are receiving it.”
And he says, a plan needs to be in place for how to deal with these drought-like conditions.
“You know, now that we feel the situation is being managed we do need to start thinking about the future and identifying any gaps in our current system that there may be so we can fill those gaps.”
Churchill wants homeowners to let their municipal government know if their wells have run dry.
He says the province and municipalities need to work together to ensure municipal water sources are prepared to help those on wells when the need arises.
