Tie the outdoor Christmas decorations down tight, we’re in for a windy, wet Christmas according to Environment Canada.
A special weather statement is in effect for the Tri-Counties.
Environment Canada says a low pressure system approaching from the Great Lakes will bring warm, wet, and windy conditions for Christmas and Boxing Day.
Up to 60mm is possible in local showers, with wind gusts between 70 and 90km/h, higher in exposed areas.
On top of that, higher than normal water levels are expected along parts of the South Shore, and 6-metre waves are expected by early Saturday morning, for most of the day.
The forecast has led Bay Ferries to cancel a couple of sailings aboard the Fundy Rose ferry from Digby to Saint John, New Brunswick.
The vessel’s departure from Digby at 1:00 this afternoon is cancelled.
On Boxing Day, a scheduled 9:00 a.m. sail from Saint John is also cancelled.
It was three years ago that the province was subjected to a wild wind storm, with gusts clocked as high as 117 km/h that snapped power poles and trees, knocking power out to nearly 250,000 customers at its peak.
Customers in Shelburne and Yarmouth Counties went for days without electricity afterwards.
At the time, it was the worst power outage the province has endured since hurricane Juan.
