The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs has declared a state of emergency.
In a press release issued on Friday, the Assembly said the decision is based on political unrest, and in response to violence happening over the Mi’kmaq fisheries province-wide.
They also noted that it’s possible that the state of emergency could extend to Cape Breton Island.
The Assembly says a command centre will be established in an undisclosed location, and supporters and members of the Mi’kmaw nation will be on hand to support harvesters.
The state of emergency is effective immediately and extends to Tuesday at 5pm with the possibility of an extension.
They’re calling on DFO, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Bernadette Jordan, RCMP, and the province to assist with protection.

State of Emergency declared on September 18th, 2020.
