Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of the death of one of the country’s most beloved folk artists.
Maud Lewis passed away of pneumonia in Digby on July 30, 1970.
Lewis was born in Yarmouth but lived most of her life in Marshalltown, Digby County.
Despite significant physical impairments, she rose to prominence as a folk artist.
Her signature brightly-coloured paintings drew from many different influences, particularly nature and outdoor scenes.
The tiny one-room home that she and her husband Everette occupied is on permanent display at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
A biopic starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins, named ‘Maudie’, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim.
