Saturday night was supposed to be a relaxing time with family, but for one woman it didn’t turn out that way.
Margaret Bolivar lives in Hebbville directly across from the Gerhardt’s Trucking compound. Saturday evening she and her husband were chatting with their daughter and her friends in their backyard, when they heard a crash across the street.
Her husband Greg went to investigate, thinking there had been an accident.
“He saw a 4X4 truck with a plow on it ramming the iron gates across the street at Gerhardt’s Trucking. He said Marg you better come here now. I saw what was happening and knew it wasn’t right,”she said.
Despite not being able to see the driver she says she just had a hunch it was Tobias Doucette.
“I couldn’t see, but it was uncanny what was taking place across the street. I called 911 and told them I needed someone here quick because I really think it’s Tobias that you’re looking for, and he’s trying to break through the gate. I need police here now.”
Bolivar’s daughter Brittany filmed events on her cellphone, from the ramming efforts to Doucette parking the truck.
Doucette finally gave up trying to break through the gate and parked the truck between the tractor trailers. He got out of the truck and walked away towards Saunders Motors, looking back at Bolivar as he did.
“I wasn’t scared, my adrenaline was just going. He looked back at me and saw me watching him, knowing I was probably on the phone with authorities,” she said.
“He crossed the street then, because if he had gone any farther on the side he was on you walk into swamp. I felt then I knew what direction he’d gone in because of logistics.”
She says within three minutes of calling 911 an unmarked police car pulled up, followed by other police cars.
“Yesterday was kind of crazy, I haven’t really had time to sit and think about it, but as time goes on I’m just glad it’s over, for everyone who was in fear.”
Doucette is expected to appear at Bridgewater Justice Centre today for initial plea.
BPS and RCMP are investigating charges for Doucette, including Attempt Murder, Aggravated Assault, Assault with A Weapon, Assault, Injuring a Law Enforcement Animal, two counts of Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Mischief under $5000 as well as theft of a motor vehicle.
