Pristine turquoise waters, beautiful white sand, and a whole lot of garbage.
Carter’s Beach in Port Mouton has quickly become one of the South Shore’s most popular beaches but the PC MLA for Queens-Shelburne says there’s a big problem.
Kim Masland says a lack of waste management or washrooms have led to a pileup of rotting garbage.
She’s calling on the province to address the three most problematic issues: proper parking, washrooms, and garbage cans.
“For the number of people that are going there, there needs to be some type of facility to make sure that we are in a balanced approach of having visitors there, and protecting the ecosystem,” she explained.
Masland says she’s raised the issue with three different Environment Ministers since 2017 and so far, there’s been no improvements.
“Every year, it’s the same thing,” she said. “We’re working on a plan. We’re working on a plan. It should not take government three years to figure out how to put in a washroom facility and garbage cans,” she stated.
The MLA did explain that the beach isn’t an official provincial park, though that designation is expected in the near future.
