(CJLS News file photo) The Yarmouth Shark Scramble will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
The event begins Wednesday, August 15 when boats depart that evening.
Weigh-ins will be held on Saturday, August 18, at noon at Parker Eakin’s Wharf, with prizes awarded in the evening.
Organizer Bob Gavel says only blue sharks will be landed.
“We weren’t catching many mako sharks anyway, so they weren’t getting enough scientific information to do any benefit to them, so we just decided there was no need to bring them in so we’re just going to bring in the blue shark.”
Gavel says no shark dissections by DFO scientists will be performed on the dock this year.
There will be tissue samples taken by scientists from other organizations.
He says the scramble is very popular. “People are always curious about sharks, and to see sharks of that size up close and to learn some education on them, I guess that’s what intrigues them.”
Gavel says there with be a fish pond, face painting and photo ops.
