With the re-opening of Mariners Centre still up in the air, the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association has been lobbying on behalf of the players and parents.
Association President Lise Newell says they are still waiting to find out when they can get started.
“It’s still kind of up in the air, from what I’ve been told; the YCMHA was really hopeful for August first however, it doesn’t seem to be happening, so I’m not sure what the delays are; we haven’t been told formally.”
She says some families are taking their kids to hockey camps in HRM and, now, the other Maritime provinces in order to be ready and that the association has been pushing for a date so that they can prepare.
“Normally, there’s a time span in the summer when they don’t have ice but this is not a normal year, as we know, so right now, there is not a lot of recreational facilities opened and they are starting to become opened. There’s a lot of rinks open into the city and other provinces.”
She says they have let the Mariners Centre board of directors know that they can get people on the ice immediately.
“YCMHA, in partnership with the Junior A Mariners, are prepared to offer camps every single day of the week, Monday to Friday, as soon as the arena opens, and we’ve submitted that proposal to the Mariners board. So, as soon as they have ice, we have programs for our kids ready to go.”
She says a lot of parents are asking them questions but the Association don’t know any more than the parents right now.
