Calls for a public inquiry are growing louder following the a spree shooting in Nova Scotia back in April that claimed 22 lives.
The Tri-County Women’s Centre has added their voice to the mix.
In a release issued Friday, the Centre says it calls on the Premier and the Justice Minister to launch a public inquiry, with a feminist analysis, that can identify the underlying misogynistic basis for the crime.
The Centre explains that years of working with and supporting women has shown them that violence does not erupt spontaneously.
Both the provincial and federal governments are being urged by stakeholders including family members of the victims, politicians, non-profit organizations, and the public to launch an inquiry.
Provincial justice minister Mark Furey said at the beginning of the month that an announcement about an inquiry was imminent.
He reaffirmed that the ‘inquiry mechanism’ into a joint federal-provincial inquiry was done just 11 days ago, and they’re working out a time and location for the announcement.
