As part of National Indigenous History Month, today is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.
The Assembly of First Nations originally called for the creation of a day of solidarity in 1982 and it was recommended by the Sacred Assembly and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in 1995 before being proclaimed by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc the following year.
The federal government describes it as “a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples”.
