Today will be a day to reflect for many in the region.
It was six years ago, three RCMP officers in Moncton were tragically killed, and two others were injured.
Moncton City Councillor Bryan Butler says every year he encourages everyone to leave their back porch light on, something they were asked to do on that tragic night.
“It just kind of stuck with me,” he explained. “Everything can happen in a flash, and it just shows a little respect for all of the members who were involved that night, so they know we haven’t forgotten them.”
Butler retired from his career as a police officer in 2013, the year before the tragedy.
He says everyone deals with June 4th differently.
“Some police officers I know just want to be by themselves today, while others like to pay tribute with a visit to the statues of the three lost officers, and reflect back on this tragic day.”
He adds it is also important we take a moment to think about those who have been left behind, as well as the many emergency responders and others who have been dramatically affected by that tragic night.
Many visit the Honour Garden along the Riverfront Trail, to stand with Constables Fabrice Gevaudan, Dave Ross and Doug Larche.
Butler says, “It is a sad part of our history, that’s for sure.”
