The Department of Health and Wellness is reporting another COVID-19 related death in Nova Scotia.
The death, the 56th in the province, occurred at the Northwood long-term care home in Halifax.
Premier Stephen McNeil offered his condolences to the family and loved ones on behalf of the province.
“And, to the residents, staff, and frontline workers at Northwood, we are thinking about you, too. It is a difficult time at Northwood but we are making progress and we won’t stop until the virus has been defeated…and we thank you for the work that you are doing on behalf of all of us at Northwood.”
One new positive case was identified yesterday, for a total of 1044, along with 36,438 negative COVID-19 test results.
Nine people are in the hospital, five of those in Intensive Care, and 956 people have now recovered.
Seafood processing plants are being inspected for COVID-19 as part of their regular inspections.
Dr. Robert Strang, the chief medical officer of health says the occupational and health and safety division are continuing to conduct inspections just as they do for any other open businesses.
“They have an ongoing process, like any business, under the same requirements that they would have had before COVID-19 and, certainly, they’re well aware of those specific requirements related to COVID-19.”
The Premier says they are looking at opening up Nova Scotia a bit more.
Stephen McNeil says residents have been doing a great job of following protocols lately and that it depends on what Public Health sees over the next little while.
He said they are trying to balance the safety of Nova Scotians with restarting the economy.
“In this first step, we want to finish the consultation, we want to follow up to make sure businesses are ready, and we want everyone to be focused on what they have to do to welcome their customers back safely. If we get this right, we could be ready by early June.”
The Premier says Minister of Business Geoff MacLellan is working with chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang whether or not the province is ready.
