There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the upcoming lobster season in the northern part of the province as a result of COVID-19.
Inverness South Fishermen’s Association President Jordan MacDougall says delaying the start of their season would be a huge blow to the provincial economy.
MacDougall says it’s also not worth it to be fishing if they can’t sell their catch.
“The markets tanked, so the product’s not going to be well-received price-wise,” he said. “Things are tough in that nature. The processors are having trouble getting workers to process the lobster and the live markets…well, that’s dismal too.”
MacDougall says they’re focused on safety for now.
He says they’ve been in talks with federal officials and they expect a decision on the season soon.
