The mayor of Shelburne isn’t mincing words.
Karen Mattatall says the provincial government and the Nova Scotia Health Authority are incompetent.
She is reacting to the latest closure of Roseway Hospital’s emergency department.
This one is lengthy, a total of 104 hours, much of it through the upcoming long weekend.

Mattatall tells Acadia News she was almost lost for words because she is so angry.
“As a resident and as a mayor it make me extremely upset. Out of that time, two of those periods are 38 hours at a time. We’re over 100 kilometres from access to the nearest hospital. All you can do is tell people to be cautious and be safe. this has gone way past being unacceptable”
She says it’s another indication that neither the province nor the Nova Scotia Health Authority are competent in guaranteeing residents have access to health care services.
“Maybe it’s time that people who aren’t being provided proper access to health care should stop paying their share of health care costs.”
Mattatall says it’s ironic that the health authority’s recruitment site is advertising for an emergency room physician for Roseway Hospital.
The recruitment notice says says Shelburne’s emergency department is open “24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
The mayor calls that false advertising.
