Justice Mona Lynch delivered her verdict on John Collyer’s case this afternoon, sentencing the former Bridgewater Police Chief to 15 months in jail and one year of probation along with other conditions.
In October of last year, he was found guilty of one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual exploitation. The charges stemmed from messages and interactions Collyer had with a girl who was 17 at the time.
Collyer will be put on the Sex Offender Registry for 20 years and will have to submit his DNA to a government database.
A no-contact order was also placed on Collyer, meaning he is not allowed to communicate with the victim or her family.
He also will be prohibited from using alcohol or drugs during his probation. During the trial, Collyer claimed the inappropriate messages leading up to his conviction were sent while he was under the influence of alcohol.
Justice Lynch said in her decision that force physical force was used so a mandatory weapon probation (one year) was issued along with a lifetime ban for restricted weapons.
More to come…
