*The YCMHS Mixed curling team went undefeated in the Round Robin portion of the Western NSSAF curling regionals this weekend. The team, Skipped by Ryan Churchill …with Mate, Emma Gould….Second, Lucas Rodney…and Lead, Hannah Saulnier, fell just short in the finals and placed 2nd. They move on to the NSSAF Provincial curling bonspiel in Chester!
*At the N.S. Stick Curling Championships, being played in Yarmouth, Dave MacDougal and Paul Doucet won the Provincial Open Championship, defeating Shawn Christenson and Pierre Doucet, also from Yarmouth. The Ladies Division was won by Doreen Densmore and Caroline Belliveau, from Lakeshore Curling Club. They defeated defending champions Pauline Bullerwell and Diane Mallinson, from Yarmouth.
*Celebrating 10 years of Carnivolley, Southwest Fusion Volleyball club held their home tournament this past Saturday. Southwest Fusion’s u15 team hosted the 6 team U16 tournament. Participating teams were Dartmouth Volleyball Club, Bridgewater Chill, Digby Crossfires, Yarmouth’s Western Warriors and U15 and U16 Southwest Fusion. The 2 home teams played in the championship game with U16 SWF topping U15 SWF to earn the gold banners. The young U15 squad preformed well against the older teams before coming up short in the championship game, earning then the silver banners. Digby Crossfires took 3rd place by defeating Bridgewater Chill in the consolation game. Yarmouth’s new club, the Western Warriors knocked out Dartmouth Volley Club to take 5th place overall. Southwest Fusion’s young U13 team volunteered at the Carnivolley tournament, keeping score and filling out the game score sheets. The next volleyball action will take place at the end of the month at Volleyball Nova Scotia’s Superseries # 2 events. U15 Southwest Fusion will be playing in U15 tier 1 action at Ecole Secondaire de Sommet in Halifax and the U16 team will be competing in Truro at the U16 tier 1 Superseries event. Digby Crossfires will be hosting their U16 tier 2 tournament at Saint Mary’s Bay Academy.
*In the Maritime Hockey League, Summerside doubled Truro 4-2 and Edmunston beat Grand Falls 6-3.
*The Summerside Western Capitals have moved up one spot into the #2 position on the CJHL Top 20 rankings this week after picking up three victories in four days over the past week. The Edmundston Blizzard were named an Honourable Mention and Alberta’s Sherwood Park Crusaders are the #1 Jr. A hockey team in Canada again this week.
*In the Valley High School Hockey League playoffs, the Clare Loups edged the Yarmouth Vikings Sunday at Mariners Centre, 3-2 in a shootout. Scoring for Clare was Jean-Luc Comeau and Leon Bouchard in regulation play and the winning shootout goal was scored by Mario Boudreau. For Yarmouth, Issac Moore and JJ MacPhee scored.
*The Yarmouth Scotibank Western Riptide Bantam A girls continued their playoffs on the weekend, clipping the visiting Metro West Force Raiders 2-1. Rene Melanson scored both goals, while Isabelle d’Entremont and Courtney Fitzgerald each had an assist.
*The Yarmouth GPK Refrigeration Bantam A Mariners lost game 2 of the Hockey Nova Scotia play downs 3-1 against the Western Valley Spartans. Scoring for the Mariners was Blake Fish with assists coming from Nolan Cottreau and Landon Watkins-Bonnar. Braeden Hipson was in net. A deciding game three will take place this coming weekend, hosted by Western Valley.
*The Yarmouth Pink Star Barro Atom A Mariners played Playoff games #2 and #3 in their Best-of-3 play-off series with South Shore in Yarmouth on the weekend. On Saturday, they won 2-1. Cullen Fitzgerald and Parker LeBlanc scored with assists from Cullen Fitzgerald, Myles Ellis, Brady Newell and Samuel Green . Austin Stoddard was in net. Sunday, South Shore beat Yarmouth 7-1. Parker LeBlanc scored unassisted. Austin Stoddard was in net.
*The Yarmouth Y Whitecaps attended the 2020 AA Winter Championships in Antigonish NS this past weekend. From February 15-17th.
