The Liberal Candidate for South Shore St.Margaret’s is fighting back over accusations her party would shut down the fishery in Nova Scotia.
In a statement released last week, West Nova Conservative Candidate Chris d’Entremont says Justin Trudeau promised to shut down 25 percent of Canada’s oceans by 2025.
Liberal Bernadette Jordan says that is absolutely ridiculous.
“It’s causing anxiety that isn’t fair – it’s misinformation. I’ve even seen the anger from people as online threats towards me. Quite frankly, it’s categorically false.”
d’Entremont was referencing the Liberal’s plan to increase the percentage of Marine Protected Areas across the country from 15 to 25 percent.
Jordan calls it fear-mongering.
“We know this is a $2 Billion dollar industry. We’ve done a lot for fisheries and we’re going to continue to do that. And we know that MPAs have to be built from the ground up. Nothing would be done without consultation with the industries.”
Jordan says over the past four years in government, they invested hundreds of millions for small craft harbours and to encourage innovation as well as negotiated international trade deals to get product to market.
She says as part of their election platform, they’ve also committed an additional $40 million per year for small craft harbours.
