The Municipality of Yarmouth is looking to make Port Maitland Beach more accessible.
Council is looking into the cost of purchasing two Mobi Wheelchairs, a float-able wheelchair for those with mobility issues, for use at Port Maitland Beach.
It was discussed during council’s meeting Wednesday night after Councillor Patti Durkee put forward the motion.
She says it’s always been an important issue for her.
“I made a motion for council to investigate the cost of purchasing Mobi mats and two wheelchairs with big float-able wheels, and council voted to approve the investigation of cost,” she said.
Durkee says it would be amazing for people in wheelchairs to get on the beach and into the salt water, and believes the beach could accommodate this.
“There are so many people who have a disability who could enjoy the beach,” said Durkee, “I asked them to look into having two, because there would be nothing more fun than sharing that experience with a friend.”
The Mobi chairs are very popular at other Nova Scotia beaches.
