Lower East Pubnico is home to a new Canadian champion.
Burlin Nickerson outlasted 36 other men to win the National Axe Throwing Championship Sunday in Liverpool.
The 38 year-old says he’s been throwing axes competitively since 1994.
But, never considered himself a favourite to win.
“Throwing in Canada has always been a fun event. The Europeans upped the game a bit and made it super serious. It’s a different game and guys are world class. It is a lot tougher to win then it was 10 or even 20 years ago.”
But, he adds, as soon as he reached the final six, he knew anything could happen.
“I realized I had it in me to possibly win. I went in mentally prepared to do my best and luckily all the stars aligned and I got hot and threw what I had to throw to win.”
Daniel Hedberg of Sweden was second followed by Pierre Kaminski of Germany in third.
In the women’s division, Tina Nordberg and Anki Hedberg of Sweden finished first and second followed by Colpton’s Rebecca Fancy in third.
In the junior division, it was a Canadian sweep on the podium with Aiden Weeks, Lukas Nickerson and Jordyn Hopkins finishing first through third, respectively.
