
The Not Without Us project includes community meetings that are held in locations around the province.
Sherry Costa, provincial co-ordinator for the Nova Scotia League for Equal Opportunities says a 2018 report from the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics was troubling.
“in 45 per cent of all incidents, violent crime victims were women with disabilities. Victimization among women with a mental-health related disability were four times higher compared to those without a disability. Those numbers were absolutely alarming.”
She says the sessions provide a safe space for women with disabilities who have experienced violence.
‘To be able to connect with peers and discuss their experiences. We’ll gather information from those conversations to be used to develop violence prevention programs.”
They are being held in Yarmouth, at NSCC Burridge Campus tomorrow and at the Shelburne Campus on Thursday.
