There won’t be a Christmas parade in Yarmouth this year.
Instead a big street festival is being planned and the theme for the inaugural event will be ‘Jingle All The Way’.
Barb Firth, chair of the Christmas Festival Committee says there will be people passing out candy, bands, carolers and stationary floats on low trailers and more.
“You’re going to get a much better picture than the trailer that’s high up. The only high trailer is going to be the Santa float. it will have steps so that kids can go up and get their picture taken with Santa.”
She says it would be similar to the Switch Open House that’s held in the summer.
“When I close my eyes I can see it. It’s going to be great.”
She says no one has or should forget what happened last year when a 4-year-old girl died along the parade route after coming into contact with a moving float.
” I know that some people want a parade and I understand that, but I think it’s time to move forward and get the community together. I don’t think we should ever forget what happened. Ever. It was a tragic, horrible accident. but it’s time to move on.”
She says nothing has been set in stone and there’s details to be worked out.
“We’re going to close off the street (Main Street) from Forest Street to Frost Park. We’re talking about a two hour festival from say, 6 to 8 because we want to have it while it’s dark so everything can be lit up.”
She’d like to see it happen around the first weekend in December.
You can hear the full interview with Barb Firth on the Weekender, this Sunday morning (Aug. 9), right after the 9 a.m. news.
Y95 News will provide more information as details are confirmed in the coming weeks.
