Preparations are underway for the demolition of a section of the former DomTex building in Yarmouth.
A crane is on site and safety fencing has been placed around the middle section of the building on the east and west sides.
That section of the former cotton mill had deteriorated over the years and there are leaks, mould and issues with the electrical system.
The building is owned by the Yarmouth and Area Industrial Commission which is comprised of the Town of Yarmouth and the Municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle.
Deputy Mayor Phil Mooney says a large section of the building on the harbour side will come down along with a portion on the Water Street side because a retaining wall has to be built.
He says the process is in the preliminary stages.
“On safety concerns, they have meetings every day. They have engineers on the site. It’s a large job in scope, they have to save three properties which are Nova Tec, the old Germains property and the property on the end (north east), which used to be Hurlburt’s Construction. They will be walled in and we have to change all the electrical, water and sprinkler systems to accommodate those businesses, then we’ll go on from there. ”
He says an engineering study determined the cost of fixing it up would be many millions more than tearing it down.
