Two Yarmouth town councillors are taking the ‘Wheelchair Challenge’ today.
Wade Cleveland and Sandy Dennis are heading around town until 5pm with a map of places to go and check in.
The challenge was put out by Mike Innis of Happy Feet Orthotics, who had requested and was denied a handicapped parking spot in front of his business.
Innis says he wants to bring accessibility issues to the forefront.
“We thought we’d put this wheelchair challenge on, to invite council, the mayor and the town planner to see what it’s like trying to get around downtown Yarmouth.”
Cleveland says the town is looking into how many handicapped parking spaces they have, and if they need to move.
“We need to get this assessment done so we know how many are needed. There will be a change, but there’s no point in painting one right now if it were to be decided it needs to be somewhere else.”
Innis says he’ll be donating $50 for each councillor to the Red Cross for completing the challenge.
