The Town of Yarmouth will be reaching out to its municipal neighbours to discuss the future of Mariners Centre.
At town council last night, Mayor Pam Mood made a motion to task herself, Deputy Mayor Phil Mooney and CAO Jeff Gushue to engage discussions with the municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle in an effort to take next steps on the facility and other recreational needs of the community.
Mayor Mood says this follows the next step in the consultant’s report from the Mariners Centre feasibility study.
“We haven’t sat down and discussed if it includes the curling club or the YMCA, if it is what does it look like? It’s the next step in the discussions. The town is initiating this because the consultants said that is the next step. If anyone wants to move it forward, we have to take care of what the consultants said we need to do next.”
Mood says Mariners Centre has always been a regional priority, and they are excited for the next steps.
She says the town and the other two municipal units have been working on their own priorities, and the town is willing and able to work on more than one project.
Mood says the planned arts and culture centre for downtown has never replaced the Mariners Centre discussion.
She says support for projects is shown through funding, and the town has placed $540,000 in its capital budget for Mariners Centre expansion, along with $132,000 for curling and $1.9 million for an aquatic facility.
