Now that summer and warm weather are here, more people are heading to their favourite beach or lake.
The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service will begin supervision at a number of locations in our region on Saturday.
In Yarmouth County those include Lake Milo, Lake Ellenwood and Port Maitland.
There’s also Mavillette Beach in Clare and Rissers Beach in Lunenburg County.
Paul d’Eon, director of the Lifeguard Service, says for the past five days, they’ve been putting them through their paces.
“Right now we’re examining them in Nation Lifeguard, CPR, defibrillation and oxygen. By the end of this training camp they’ll be certified in those. There’s also lots of physical fitness and rescue training.”
He says parents or guardians with youngsters also play a big role.
“The Nova Scotia Life Saving Society has a theme “Keep Your children within Arms Reach”. When you’ve got young ones you should go into the water with them. They can can get in trouble pretty quickly.”
d’Eon reminds folks that when at a supervised beach, stay between the yellow flags.
Lifeguards set those in the least dangerous area on the beach where no rip tides or other hazards are present.
The lifeguard service wraps up at the end of August although some select beaches extend into September.
Unless otherwise noted, the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service has lifeguards on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily in July and August.
