Canadian airlines are allowed to keep pilots in the air for up to 17 hours straight without a nap.
Pilots are now speaking out because they believe that standard is unreasonable.
Captain Matt Hogan says the ‘Safer Skies’ Campaign is aimed at getting the federal government to change fatigue laws.
Hogan says they haven’t been updated since 1996.
“We want this to be implemented sooner rather than later. They’re talking about 48 months.”
Hogan says they’ve created a petition in hopes of putting pressure on Ottawa to fast track new regulations.
So far more than 4,700 people have signed.
Hogan says sleep science has come a long way in the 20 years since the current regulations were put in place.
He says it’s time for industry to catch up.
