A group of parents want to see Wedgeport School replaced as soon as possible.
The Wedgeport Parent Action Committee says the survival of the French-speaking Acadian culture in Wedgeport is being compromised because of irresponsible decisions by the province.
Parent Kelley LeBlanc has a child in Grade Primary and one starting the pre-primary program in the fall.
She says it’s time for the school to be replaced, as problems like leaky pipes and broken floor tiles keep piling up.
“Announcements about new schools and repairs at English speaking schools keep coming, yet the CSAP has Wedgeport as number one on the list. Security at the building for a lock-down is also an issue. There are a lot of broken issues at the school. Repairs keep getting put off because the thought is, ‘oh we’ll just get a replacement soon enough, so we aren’t going to spend the money.’”
LeBlanc says the current school, built in 1960 no longer meets the needs of the students.
She says the school is the centre of the community and is important in retaining Acadian culture.
LeBlanc says she’s encouraged to hear that candidates in Argyle-Barrington want to see the school replaced.
