The federal government is committed to driving down tobacco use in the Canadian population by five per cent by 2035.
As part of that approach, the government announced public consultations on proposals to apply plain and standardized packaging to tobacco products.
In a news release, the government said tobacco packages remain powerful promotional vehicles for attracting new users.
They say research shows plain or standardized packaging reduces that appeal, especially to youth.
The proposed regulations would apply to all tobacco packaging and certain tobacco products.
Measures include removing distinctive or attractive features, and requiring all packaging to be the same unappealing colour.
Federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor says every year, 45,000 Canadians die from preventable diseases directly linked to smoking and tobacco use.
The consultations will run until September 6th.
