A judge has just ordered the release of documents about fish farm activities.
Ron Neufeld says the Kelly Cove Salmon Ltd salmon farm which operates 200 meters from his and Kathaleen Milan property is larger than permitted.
He says he’s also seen medicated fish feed being dumped outside the pen.
The pair appeared in Bridgewater Supreme Court after five FOIPOP requests for documents from the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture were denied.
They took their concerns to the office of the privacy commissioner.
She recommended DFA hand over the information, but again fisheries officials refused so Neufeld and Milan took the department to court.
Neufeld says the Commissioner should have the power to order government to release information.
“That way if the government doesn’t like the decision and they want to appeal it, they take the Commisioner to court. It shouldn’t be a resident, a citizen of Nova Scotia that has to go to the Supreme Court.”
Neufeld wants Stephen McNeil to stand by a promise he made when he first ran for Premier to give Nova Scotia’s Privacy Commissioner that authority.
